The popular middle-grade graphic novel series, The Geeky Fab 5, has agreed to a rights deal with ICU for the development of animation projects and related work.
Imagination Connoisseurs Unlimited, LLC (ICU) announced the acquisition of rights for developing and producing animation and related work based on the popular middle-grade graphic novel series, The Geeky Fab 5, written by the mother-daughter team of Liz and Lucy Lareau. The stories focus on a group of five girls who “geek out” over science, technology, engineering, and math.
The girls use their common interests and enthusiasm to create new and inventive solutions to problems in their community. The characters and storylines in the original books are based on the real-life experiences of Lucy Lareau who, when she was in fifth grade, asked her mom why girls weren’t supposed to like math.
Liz Lareau, a journalist by training and now a university instructor on communications theory and methods, tried her hand at writing in a new medium – comics – to communicate with other kids her daughter’s age. Telling them it was okay for girls to like science and math and that they could use their creative powers for good.
And the Geeky Fab 5 was born!
“I read Liz and Lucy’s series of books and was blown away,” said ICU Chief Creative Officer, Robert Meyer Burnett. “These are real stories and interesting characters. And best of all, they’re stories kids of all ages need to hear today … especially young girls who are often told that science and engineering are for boys.”
ICU will work with Liz as the franchise creator on the project (Lucy is leaving for college and will consult via Zoom in the future). Burnett will build a team of entertainment industry professionals to develop and create a set of stories and concepts that can be pitched to other production partners.
“Sure, an animated series would be ideal,” said Mr. Burnett. “But we want to tell more GF5 stories any way we can. Like they say, the world is a better place when we all work together.”
